Inter-House Quiz and Spelling Bee
Three Houses met in separate locations around the School to battle one another in the annual intellectual showdown that is the Inter-House Quiz and, for the second year running, the Inter-House Spelling Bee.
Butler battled Shelburne and Cloister in the Panelled Room at Daws Hill, and after half an hour of intense interrogation Shelburne emerged as quiz winners. The Spelling Bee was an incredibly tense affair with Butler and Shelburne tied for the lead after two rounds and therefore facing a sudden-death ‘Spell Off' to decide the winner. After Sheluburne's 'perennial' problem, Butler were declared the winners and progressed to the final.
There was fierce competition in Fisher Library between Airlie, Pitt, and Wendover. Airlie are to be applauded for their knowledge of Greek goddesses and Pitt were perfect in their recall of Churchill facts. However, Wendover beat off their competitors with some very impressive scores to be crowned quiz winners of this heat. Jaws dropped as all the girls impressed with their spelling ability: both Airlie and Wendover scored perfect scores in the first round with Pitt only four points behind. Fantastic tactical play in the second round saw Pitt quickly catch up; however, they were pipped to the post by Airlie with only one word separating all three teams.
Seniors' Hall saw a brutal round of matches between Barry, Campbell and Rubens. After Campbell and Rubens had defeated Barry, they faced each other, with the winners going through to the next round. It was a very close match, with some difficult starter questions that left both teams pondering. In the end Campbell's sound knowledge was not quite sound enough, and it was Rubens that progressed through to the final. Campbell proved themselves in the Spelling Bee however; they held their nerve brilliantly and booked a place in the next round.
A huge well done to all competitors who were all in possession of what makes great champions: confidence, bravery and quick wit. We are all looking forward to the final when Shelburne, Wendover and Rubens will battle to be crowned winners of the quiz, and Butler, Airlie and Campbell will hope to spell their way to success in the Spelling Bee.
