A Taste of Politics - UV Girls Visit Westminster

Two girls from UV, were lucky enough to have the opportunity to attend a seminar, entitled ‘The High Life – What Cost?' in the House of Commons. The seminar was organised by a charity dedicated to the prevention of drug and alcohol dependency.

We heard from two speakers, and during the speeches a number of shocking facts concerning the misuse of drugs and alcohol were brought to light. It was fascinating to hear such knowledgeable speakers talk about a subject of escalating concern in our modern day society, and also to be given the chance, alongside students from other schools, to voice our own opinions on the matter in the short discussion that followed.

Feeling inspired, we decided to end our incredible Houses of Parliament experience with a trip into the Lords and the Commons. We were completely captivated by each of the chambers and the debates we witnessed. We felt particularly privileged to be in the Commons viewing gallery watching the Prime Minister taking questions on European funding. We were also there to hear Theresa May's explanation of the relaxing of border controls last summer. Hearing both the seminar and the debates in the chambers was truly inspirational, and we feel that in future, we will take a more active interest in politics, both locally and on a wider scale.

Finally, we must say a huge thank you to Mrs Wright, who accompanied us on the trip, shared in our enthusiasm and fuelled our discussions throughout the day.
