List of Current Clubs and Societies

There are a large number of clubs and societies at Wycombe catering for most tastes from debating to dance.

Although many of these societies have a long tradition, the range of activities is by no means static: all you have to do is find a few like-minded girls and a willing member of staff and start your own!

Green Society

You may have heard about the new Environmental and Energy Conservation Group (EECG) and want to know exactly what it does. Over the past two years, a lot of work has been going on to make our school more environmentally friendly. Sophie Gault and I aimed to make sure there were adequate recycling facilities and measures were being taken to reduce energy wastage, but most importantly we wanted people to be sure they were doing all they could in their own homes to save energy and recycle, by raising awareness.

At school events, namely Bonfire night and the summer fête, you will hopefully have noticed the new rubbish collection points. I can happily report that last Bonfire night we managed to recycle approximately 35% of the rubbish, which is a huge improvement on last year and before that no recycling system was even in place. I would like to thank you all for your support and compliance which has been invaluable to our efforts. We have also managed to lower the school’s energy consumption, most significantly in the sport’s centre, so thanks again to staff and girls for remembering to switch off lights and radiators when not being used.

Stay green and keep up the effort!

Basketball Club

Basketball at Wycombe Abbey has undergone a renaissance this year, as an increased focus on the sport in PE lessons has led to many girls deciding to give the after-school club a try. The club is open to girls in the Upper V and above, and although only a handful of girls attended the weekly sessions in past years, this year's practices typically draw between twelve and fifteen players.

Practices in the winter term focused on the fundamentals of the game, including dribbling, shooting lay-ups, passing, rebounding, and defending. As the girls' skills improved and they became more familiar with the game, practices began incorporating more advanced strategy, such as more challenging drills and set plays, with a view towards competitive matches later in the year. For a sport that has never had a major presence at the school to come so far in such a short period is hugely encouraging, and with most of the team set to return next year, all indicators suggest that the future looks bright for basketball at Wycombe.

Computer Club

The Junior House Computer Club is bursting with life and enthusiasm for ICT and technology.  All of the girls are extremely competent with computers (many much more so than myself!) and will eagerly try out new software or new pieces of machinery for use in fun activities.  We recently made a music video to many of the girls’ favourite song from Disney’s ‘High School Musical’; “Get’cha Head in the Game” and it was lovely to see everyone with different talents come together in a shared love of technology to contribute to its making; the choreographer, the camerawoman, the musician.  Junior Computer Club is also an opportunity to use ICT in fun and interesting ways, such as playing games on the smart boards, and we are planning on using a design programme to make a T-shirt which we can then get printed as a memory of their time in Junior House and, of course, Junior Computer Club!
