History of Art is an academic Advanced Level course, which is readily accepted by universities. It is concerned with the study of European painting, sculpture and architecture, and approaches our cultural and historical heritage in a new way. The specification explores the foundations of the Modern tradition from Antiquity to the twentieth century. A general interest in art and architecture is all that is required to embark on the course.
OUTLINE AS COURSE
This course offers a general survey of the progression of art in the Western tradition.
Unit 1:Ways of Seeing - an introduction to the methodology and terminology of History of Art.
Unit 2: The Birth and Rebirth of Western Art - from Greek and Roman Antiquity to the High Renaissance.
Unit 3:Art of the Modern World - art, architecture and design from 1850 to today.
OUTLINE A2 COURSE
Unit 4:Coursework project - a personal study of approximately 3000 words on a topic of your choice.
Unit 5:In-depth analysis of a specified period - from, or relating to, those studied in the AS course. This is likely to be ‘Art and Architecture in Early Renaissance Florence’ or ‘Baroque Rome’.
Unit 6:In-depth analysis of a more modern period - this is likely to be either ‘Art and Revolution’ c1750-1850, or ‘Painting in Paris 1900-1914’.
