The business game (‘The Power Boat Challenge’), involved the five boys and girls in each group.  We indulged in many intricate financial strategies, which incorporated terms such as production overheads and promotional expenditure of the products in question.  Our aim was to complete the task and also to obtain the highest profit.  In order to feel confident with our assigned groups there was an icebreaking exercise and a team building game.

On the second day we continued with the business game, deciphering accounting terms (which were glossed in the back of the given booklet for the financially ignorant).  There were further talks from the Managing Director of Goldman Sachs, the Commercial Manager of Ortho Biotech UK & Ireland and an Entrepreneur in Residence from the University of Cambridge, to name but a few. 

The combination of illuminating speeches and practical exercises, not to mention the company of the boys, resulted in a successful and thoroughly enjoyable conference.  Although some of the financial terminology was confusing, many of the aims of the conference were upheld.  As one boy said: ‘It really helped to develop my interpersonal skills and my understanding of the business process’.
